Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, the largest of its kind in the world, is the main operating station for the amphibious forces of the United States Atlantic Fleet. The base's location totals 2,120 acres and is located on the extreme northwest corner of Virginia Beach. Little Creek's mission is to provide continuously improved support and services to operational forces and coastal commods.

Opened in 1945, Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek grew out of four bases built during World War II - Amphibious Training Base, Naval Frontier Base, and campuses Bradford and Shelton. It included three annexes named after the estate's former owners - Shelton in the east, Bradford in the middle and Whitehurst in the west. In July 1945, a Secretary of the Navy established separate bases and established Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, with a commissioning date of 30 July 1945.

Today, the facility consists of four locations in three states, encompassing nearly 9,000 acres of real estate on which 15,000 military and civilian personnel work together. The amphibious base's outdoor facilities include a 6,013-acre Naval Gunfire Support Range located on Bloodsworth Island, Maryland, 80 miles north in the Chesapeake Bay. Approximately 350 acres at Camp Pendleton, between Damnek and the commercial part of Virginia Beach, constitutes Little Creek's only property with direct access to the open ocean. 21 acres of land known as Radio Island at Morehead City, North Carolina is used as an amphibious embarkation/disembarkation area for United States Marine Corps units at Camp Lejeune, NC. Port facilities are leased at a commercial terminal in Morehead City, NC near Radio Island.

The 61 piers around Little Creek Channel provide docking facilities for approximately 30 naval vessels that call home on Little Creek.

The Little Creek site contains woodland training areas in support of amphibious operations. Sandy beaches and mudflats provide a realistic scenario for second-hand training. Also includes three miles of beach on the Chesapeake Bay and 3/4 mile of beach on the Atlantic Ocean.

Navy, Army and Marine Corps Reserve personnel have access to training facilities. Their training is coordinated by the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Readiness Center at Little Creek. About 4,500 reservists train here every year. More than 75 tenants and/or supported activities reside here, most of which are directly involved in amphibious operations.
