Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, the largest base of its kind in the world, is the primary operating station for the amphibious forces of the United States Atlantic Fleet. The base location totals 2,120 acres of land and is located in the extreme northwest corner of Virginia Beach. Little Creek's mission is to provide continuously improving support and services to operational forces and commanders ashore.

Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, commissioned in 1945, grew out of four bases built during World War II - Amphibious Training Base, Marine Frontier Base, and Camps Bradford and Shelton. It consisted of three annexes named after the former owners of the estate - Shelton in the east, Bradford in the center and Whitehurst in the west. A letter from the Secretary of the Navy in July 1945 disbanded the individual bases and established Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek with a commissioning date of 30 July 1945. In 1946, Little Creek was designated as a permanent base.

Today, the facility consists of four sites in three states, encompassing nearly 9,000 acres of real estate, where 15,000 military and civilian personnel work together. Outlying amphibious base facilities include the 6,013-acre Naval Weapons Support Area on Bloodsworth Island, Maryland, 80 miles north in Chesapeake Bay. Located between Dam Neck and the commercial section of Virginia Beach, Camp Pendleton's approximately 350 acres represent Little Creek's only property with direct access to the open ocean. Twenty-one acres known as Radio Island in Morehead City, North Carolina is used as an amphibious embarkation/disembarkation area for United States Marine Corps units at Camp Lejeune, NC. Dock facilities are leased at the commercial terminal in Morehead City, NC, near Radio Island.

The 61 piers surrounding the Little Creek Channel provide moorings for approximately 30 Navy ships home docked in Little Creek.

The Little Creek site includes forest training areas to support amphibious operations. Sandy and muddy beaches provide a realistic scenario for further practical training. Three miles of Chesapeake Bay beach and 3/4 mile of Atlantic Ocean beach are also included.

Reserve personnel of the Navy, Army and Marine Corps have training facilities available. Their training is coordinated through the Marine Corps Readiness Center in Little Creek. About 4,500 reservists are trained here annually. It is home to over 75 tenants and/or supported activities, most of which are directly involved in amphibian operations. The base has three main training commanders. The Fleet Training Unit is responsible for recurrent and ongoing training of Navy and Coast Guard vessels. The mission of Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Atlantic is to provide instruction and training to US Atlantic Fleet personnel and units, reserve components, and allied military personnel to achieve and maintain an optimal state of readiness for amphibious operations; provide training in naval engineering, naval weapons support, naval science and naval craft, conduct total force training in amphibious, maritime transfer force (MPF) doctrine, tactics and techniques and waterborne operations with an emphasis on landing force matters for the Atlantic Fleet. Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek is the United States' primary facility for housing and training the nation's expeditionary forces. It is a command consisting of two properties, Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story and JEB Little Creek. The Joint Expeditionary Base consists of the former Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek and the military post at Fort Story. Together they form the crown jewel of American military bases.

On July 16, 1942, construction of Amphibious Naval Base Little Creek began as a result of Navy planners realizing that landing American troops on the beaches in the face of enemy fire would be both important and difficult. They would need new methods and tools to effectively train soldiers in the art of amphibious assault so they could strike closer to the enemy. The base originally consisted of four bases, including Camp Bradford, Camp Shelton, a US Marine base, and an amphibious training base, and was built primarily on swampland and farmland. Camp Bradford was originally a training facility for Seabees, but in 1943 it became a Landing Ship Tank (LST) training facility. Camp Shelton was an Armed Guard training center for the blue jackets who served aboard merchant ships as gun crews and served as an allocation center at the end of World War II. The border base served as a transit center for both amphibious force personnel and equipment bound for Europe. The Amphibious Training Center (Little Creek) served as a training center for all forms of amphibious training and was also responsible for the training of ship crews. They trained landing craft infantry (LSM), landing craft infantry (LCI), deterrent craft (LCU), landing craft mechanized (LCM) and landing craft personnel (LCVP).

The days at the facility were initially very difficult as all the training arrangements had to be created from scratch and most of the equipment was primitive. The base had no hot water and no roads or utilities. Base upgrades were actually the result of base members using their free time to upgrade, slowly making the base more livable. Over 200,000 Navy personnel and 160,000 Army and Navy personnel trained at Little Creek during World War II. Many of the soldiers who stormed Normandy Beach were trained here over a period of months. At the end of World War II, the bases became inactive for a short time, but due to the many advantages the base had, the current installation was renamed the Naval Amphibious Base at Little Creek and designated as a permanent base in 1946.

As of today, it serves as one of the main facilities for the Atlantic Fleet of the Navy. It is the largest facility of its kind in the world. The base's combination of operational, support and training facilities focuses primarily on amphibious operations with the mission of providing support to docked ship personnel. Marine Amphibia Base Little Creek completed its two-year merger with The Army's Fort Story on October 1, 2009.
